TARA News Letter for Sept 2003
Mailed Aug 30, 2003
Electronic Posting: Sept 10, 2003
From the pres:
Greetings:
A busy summer schedule is coming to a close.
Thanks to all of you for again making our communication events not only a great success, but also helping promote Amateur Radio as more then a hobby to the many
"thousands" involved in the AMBB and Death Ride.
And of course a special thanks to Joann Paul and John Sloane for their coordination efforts to bring it all together!
We have one new one left to go. The "TOUR de TAHOE" on September 7th.
AND THEN...
It's the September 13th Bar-B-Q with the "ENHANCED" participation on TARA'S part to make up for our canceled '02 Christmas party! Just what does enhanced mean? Well, we are dropping the potluck, and all the members have to do is show up! TARA will supply the rest!
Al Bertone, TARA's own "MASTER CHEF" will cook our steaks to perfection. Just what the rest is has yet to be determined, but stay tuned to the Monday night nets and the TARA web page for upcoming details.
I'm sorry to pass along the reporting of two SK's. Dean Benson, W7LIG and our
long time member and friend, George Lyle, K7ZAU. Both will be missed and remembered by all of us who had the pleasure to enjoy their friendships via Ham Radio.
Our regular monthly meetings will resume in October. And beginning with that month,
we will include a GUEST SPEAKER! A representative from Cal Star Ambulance will provide a presentation on the medical helicopter operations in the area. Interesting to say
the least.
So, mark your calendars for October 11th, and attend the general meeting for info and winter plans!

Happenings:
These happenings are from after the newsletter mailing:
The Tour de Tahoe went very well. John Sloane again organized the communications, even with some last minute changes
and staff shortages. Thanks John for a job well done!
Of course, it wouldn't have happend without the yeoman response from all the TARA volunteers!
Thanks for giving TARA and Amateur Radio a reputation to be proud of!
The September Bar-B-Q is here! This Saturday (9/13) at the beautiful location arranged by Kirby and Muriel! This year
the club is providing everything to eat! This is the "ENHANCED" version to make up for the canceled Christmas Party.
Directions to the site on 147.240. See ya Saturday!
STAY THE COURSE!
A short essay by our own Dick Young, KD7JMR, on his experience with the ARRL Amateur Radio Emergency Communications Course. Interesting reading. Click here for the Essay.
Current Drawing for Sept Meeting is $50 !!!
Matt, W7KJU missed his chance as he was drawn at last meeting, (he was relaxing in Hawaii!)
Repeater Systems Report
Hello All
As usual, time grows short for repeater site access. My tentative plans
and schedule call for the following:
1) Removal of the 24 system for a complete overhaul and tune up. During this service, I plan on having a substitute repeater in place. No bells or whistles, but communication via the repeater still available.
2) Removal of the 220 system for service and tune up. This is Bob's, NR7A, repeater and an important part of our communication abilities on the mountain.
3) Conversion of the Tah0E digipeater/node to 145.05 Mhz. This will allow increased access to the packet systems between Tahoe and Reno and add many stations to the west!
4) A work party may still happen depending on heavenly's plans at the site. The hardline bridge was damaged last year and needs to be rebuilt. I'll have more info shortly and will post details on web site and in emails.
Otherwise, we weathered the thunderstorms well. No problems from lightning or electrical outages. Keep your fingers crossed!

TAH0E Node is now on 145.050 as of Sept 9, 2003
