TARA News Letter for June 2003

From the pres:

Greetings Fellow TARAians !

Twas the Night before Field Day...
As I write this note for our newsletter, I am filled with anticipation that our TARA field day will fulfill the expectations of those planning on attending. Field Day provides not only practice in communicating under stressful conditions, but helps build the individual bonds among the operators to get the traffic recorded and handled in a team environment. New operators learn the skills to "snag" the contact, and then log it for later recognition under the contest rules.

Setup is another learning process that all involved can put to use in future communication scenarios. So, with the somewhat late coming together of our operation, I hope all involved will come away with a sense of accomplishment and pride in knowing we CAN setup and be on the air in a real emergency operation!!

And speaking of getting it together...
What a great job on the AMBB ride June 1st. The ride itself had some serious logistic problems, but TARA performed as true professionals. Thanks to John and Sheila Sloane for putting it together. AND, thanks to all our volunteers for their patience for holding down their positions beyond expectations. Be sure to check the TARA site for details and pictures.

Thanks to all who attended and voted for our board and officers for the current year. Some new faces along with the stalwart regulars holding down the fort. And a personal thank you for allowing me to again enjoy the role of guiding TARA through another year of events and gatherings that bring Amateur Radio to the forefront of our group and the community of South Lake Tahoe.

(Sheesh, this is sounding like a speech...)
JoAnn, N7MBM, has promoted a great thought with her ambassador idea. We'll expand on this later in the year, but please take a moment to welcome any new or out of town operators you might hear on the TARA repeaters. There is nothing worse then vising a new area, making a call on the local area repeater, and getting total silence for your efforts. Just a simple hello and how can I help will help keep Tahoe amateurs on the map as a friendly place to visit.

Sometimes I wonder just what the attraction is that holds Amateur radio so close to my everyday living. The many friends I have made, the interesting aspects of talking over the airwaves, or the satisfaction of knowing we can make a difference in the community with our volunteer efforts in a crisis.
I would hope that all of these are the reasons we bond together as a club, and enjoy both the good times with the bad ( no lunch at your assigned communication station, etc).

OK, let's get on with the TARA events of the summer, enjoy and learn from the experiences in our communication events, and finally relax and renew the friendships we build from these events at our annual Bar-B-Q in September!!

Repeater Systems Report

The TARA systems are holding up, but need some summer PM ( preventive maintenance) and rebuilding.
I'm hoping to access the sites after the Death ride. High on the list is restoring some sensitivity to the 24 repeater.
Also, the UHF link to the bay area and solving the interference problems at east peak are goals I hold as "must to do".

The Packet BBS is under going some changes as the HF port on 40 meters is picking up in interest. Currently, the 2 meter access port has moved to 145.05. This allows a "gateway" operation from 40 meters to the 2 meter port which can then connect to the Reno area via VHF nodes. Currently, skywarn traffic is being setup between Las Vegas and Reno with this mode. (the 144.93 port is "glitched" - you can connect, but no data flows) I will post additional info on the TARA systems page. So check in to see where packet is going and growing! Not to mention link status and repeater info!
A number of you have expressed interest in visiting the sites. I am working on a schedule for such a trip. But be aware.. I'll put you to work!!!
As always, more info on the TARA system page. 73 and enjoy the systems.
